Meeting between Nasser Bourita and Marco Rubio in Washington: Strengthening the Morocco-US Strategic Partnership

This Tuesday at 2 PM (local time), Foreign Minister Nasser Bourita will meet with U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio at the Department of State in Washington. This meeting is part of the strategic dialogue between the Kingdom of Morocco and the United States, two long-standing allies. Their cooperation has only strengthened in recent years, particularly since 2020, a year marked by a major diplomatic turning point.

Under the presidency of Donald Trump, the United States took a historic step by officially recognizing Morocco’s sovereignty over Western Sahara. This decision was accompanied by the announcement of the opening of an American consulate in Dakhla, providing tangible support for the Kingdom’s vision concerning this central issue. This act has given a new impetus to the bilateral partnership, extending cooperation into additional strategic sectors.

Today’s meeting, which will also include Lisa Kenna, the senior official for political affairs, will largely be held behind closed doors. However, a brief initial segment will be open to the press, allowing for limited media coverage before discussions continue in private. No specific details have yet been released regarding the content of the exchanges, although a report is expected to be published by the State Department.

Among the topics likely to be discussed are regional security cooperation, the fight against terrorism in the Sahel, stability issues in the Western Mediterranean, and economic and energy partnerships. These areas are at the heart of the cooperation between Rabat and Washington, built on decades of mutual trust.

Minister Nasser Bourita’s trip to the United States does not currently plan for any other public engagements, but it represents a key diplomatic step as regional geopolitical balances demand increasingly closer coordination between the two countries.
