Morocco Moves to Strengthen Its Air Fleet with 10 H225M Caracal Helicopters
Morocco is preparing to bolster the capabilities of its Royal Air Forces with the acquisition of 10 H225M Caracal helicopters from Airbus Helicopters. This move is part of the Kingdom’s strategy to modernize its helicopter fleet and specifically aims to enhance search and rescue, transportation, and support for special operations.
According to various French and international media outlets specializing in defense matters, Airbus announced this Moroccan order during the Dubai Airshow in November 2025. This acquisition is intended to contribute to the renewal of part of the current fleet and to the gradual replacement of older aircraft, particularly the Puma helicopters that have been in use for several decades.
The H225M Caracal, which is part of the Super Puma family, is among the main multi-role military helicopters developed by Airbus Helicopters. It is designed to operate in various operational and weather conditions, including at night and in particularly challenging environments.
The French armed forces, for instance, use this aircraft for combat search and rescue, tactical transportation, medical evacuation, as well as support for special forces and external operations.
Thanks to its versatility, the Caracal can perform missions requiring rapid intervention, significant autonomy, and the transport of personnel and equipment over long distances in complex conditions.
The aircraft can carry up to 28 people and reach a maximum speed of around 324 km/h, according to official French data.
Among its key capabilities is in-flight refueling, a feature that allows for extended mission durations and increases the helicopter’s operational range. This capability is particularly suited for operations requiring prolonged airborne presence.
The H225M can also be equipped with systems dedicated to search and rescue missions, including advanced optronic devices and winches intended for personnel extraction. Protective equipment can also be integrated to enable its use in hard-to-access areas and in challenging weather conditions.
The introduction of this type of aircraft into the Royal Air Forces would enhance their capabilities in the areas of rescue, evacuation, troop transport, and support for various operational missions.
These capabilities are especially crucial for operations requiring rapid intervention in remote or difficult-to-access zones, where aircraft must combine speed, autonomy, and adaptability to variable conditions.
The new helicopters could also be deployed for transporting personnel and equipment, providing the air forces with a versatile platform capable of addressing various operational scenarios.
Beyond the renewal of equipment, this acquisition occurs within the context of developing defense relations between Morocco and France, particularly in the fields of aerospace industry and military cooperation.
The choice of the H225M Caracal thus reflects the Kingdom’s commitment to continue modernizing its aerial assets while enhancing its operational capabilities and integrating advanced technologies in military aviation.
