Royal Air Maroc Expands and Modernizes Its Fleet to Enhance Connectivity
Royal Air Maroc is committed to renewing and expanding its fleet to accommodate rising traffic and reinforce its position as Morocco’s leading national airline for connections between Morocco, Africa, and international markets.
In this context, the airline welcomed a new Boeing 737 MAX 8 on Thursday, August 27, in Casablanca, bringing its total fleet to 69 aircraft.
This is the 18th Boeing 737 MAX 8 added to Royal Air Maroc’s lineup. With this new delivery, the number of single-aisle Boeing aircraft operated by the airline now reaches 45 planes, underscoring the critical role of this aircraft family in short and medium-haul routes.
This delivery comes at a time when the global aviation industry continues to face challenges, particularly in supply chains, production capacities, and delivery times for certain aviation programs.
Nonetheless, Royal Air Maroc aims to maintain a steady pace of fleet renewal. According to the strategies announced by the airline, the program anticipates integrating an average of 10 to 15 new aircraft per year to gradually strengthen its operational capabilities.
This dynamic aligns with the program contract signed between Royal Air Maroc and the Moroccan government in July 2023. This agreement notably envisions a significant expansion of the fleet, aiming for a total of 200 aircraft by 2037.
However, the ambition extends beyond merely increasing the number of aircraft. The airline also seeks to broaden its international network and enhance Casablanca’s role as a regional and international air hub, further connecting Morocco with Europe, Africa, the Americas, and Asia.
In this regard, Royal Air Maroc launched a tender in April 2024 for the acquisition of up to 200 aircraft, involving participation from several major global manufacturers, including Boeing, Airbus, Embraer, and ATR.
According to previously disclosed information, the Boeing segment could include up to 50 aircraft from the 737 family intended for medium-haul routes, along with approximately 20 Boeing 787 Dreamliners for long-haul services. The initial deliveries related to this significant order are expected to begin in 2028.
While awaiting the arrival of these new aircraft, the national airline is also leveraging temporary solutions, including the leasing of additional planes to address rising demand and enhance capacity during peak periods.
This strategy also supports the gradual expansion of Royal Air Maroc’s network, with the opening or strengthening of several direct connections to major international destinations.
Through the accelerated renewal of its fleet and the expansion of its network, Royal Air Maroc aims to enhance its capacity to manage future air traffic growth and solidify Casablanca’s position as a key connecting point between Africa and international markets.
