World Bank Group Launches New Global Initiative "Water Forward"

On Wednesday, the World Bank Group announced the launch of a new global initiative called "Water Forward," in partnership with multilateral development banks, development finance institutions, and other international partners. The goal is to enhance water security for approximately one billion people by 2030.

A Global Platform for Coordinating Policies and Funding

According to a statement from the World Bank, this platform aims to align policy reforms, funding, and partnerships to broaden access to reliable water services and strengthen the resilience of systems against droughts and floods.

Water: A Vital Element for Development

The World Bank emphasizes that water is a cornerstone of health, food security, and energy. It also supports around 1.7 billion jobs globally, while nearly 4 billion people suffer from water scarcity.

Supporting Developing Countries and Stimulating Investment

The initiative seeks to remove barriers that hinder investment in the water sector in many countries. It will particularly assist developing nations in establishing more reliable and resilient water systems, thereby fostering productivity, livelihoods, and private investment.

It will also back reforms aimed at strengthening institutions, improving financial performance in the sector, and developing bankable projects.

Ambitious Goals for 2030

The World Bank Group has reaffirmed its commitment to ensuring water security for 400 million people by 2030. The "Water Forward" initiative is expected to extend these services to more than one billion beneficiaries, thanks to the joint commitments of international partners.
