Newcastle Wins the English League Cup, Their First Title Since 1955

Newcastle United Claims First Major Trophy in Nearly 60 Years with League Cup Victory

On Sunday, Newcastle United achieved its first major title in almost 60 years by winning the English League Cup, triumphing over Premier League leaders Liverpool with a score of 2-1.

Supported by thousands of fans who traveled to the iconic Wembley Stadium in north London, the Magpies opened the scoring in the 45th minute thanks to Dan Burn, the towering defender who soared above Liverpool’s defense to net a powerful header.

With their supporters singing enthusiastically while proudly displaying the club’s black and white colors, Newcastle started the second half explosively, ramping up their offensive against the Reds’ goal.

Capitalizing on a lapse from Liverpool’s central defense, striker Alexander Isak doubled Newcastle’s lead in the 52nd minute.

Stung by this setback, Liverpool, managed by Dutch coach Arne Slot, attempted to regain control. However, they faced a well-organized Newcastle defense, bolstered by an outstanding performance from goalkeeper Nick Pope, who was called into action numerous times to thwart Liverpool’s potent attacks.

Isak nearly extended Newcastle’s lead to 3-0 in the 63rd minute when he found himself one-on-one with Liverpool’s goalkeeper, but his lapse in concentration proved costly.

The match proceeded with a focus on midfield play until the 94th minute, when Italian striker Federico Chiesa of Liverpool managed to evade Newcastle’s defense and appeared to score, reducing the deficit to 2-1. However, the goal was initially ruled out by the referee before being confirmed after a VAR check.

Liverpool was aiming to secure their first trophy under Slot, but the Reds, clearly still reeling from their recent elimination in the UEFA Champions League, encountered a resilient and well-coordinated Newcastle side, tightly organized around their captain, Bruno Guimarães.

The League Cup, one of the most prestigious competitions in England, represents Newcastle’s third-largest trophy since the Fairs Cup in 1969, and it’s their first national trophy since the FA Cup in 1955.
