The WHO Officially Announces That Morocco Has Mastered Hepatitis B

WHO: In line with the efforts undertaken by the Kingdom of Morocco in combating epidemic diseases, the Ministry of Health and Social Protection announces that the regional committee of the WHO for the Eastern Mediterranean has officially recognized, during its session held on November 13, 2025, in Cairo, that Morocco is now classified as a “country mastering hepatitis B.”

This recognition marks a major milestone reflecting the significant progress made by the Kingdom in the prevention, screening, and management of viral hepatitis B. It also represents an important step towards Morocco’s strategic goal of eliminating hepatitis B as a public health issue.

This decision is based on remarkable national performance in key areas, including:

  • Systematic vaccination of newborns, ensured through an effective and impactful national immunization program;
  • Strengthening the epidemiological surveillance system and laboratory diagnostic capacities;
  • Regular development and updating of therapeutic protocols, based on data from the latest national survey dedicated to viral hepatitis B.

On this occasion, the Ministry of Health and Social Protection expresses its deep appreciation for the essential role played by healthcare professionals at all levels in planning, implementing, and monitoring public health programs, as well as in continuously improving their effectiveness and impact.

The Ministry also extends its gratitude to all national and international partners for their unwavering support, which has been instrumental in achieving this significant milestone for public health in Morocco.
