Women’s Boxing World Championships: Moroccan Boxer Widad Bertal Crowned World Champion

Moroccan boxer Widad Bertal was crowned world champion in the 52-54 kg category on Sunday in Nis, Serbia, during the Women’s World Boxing Championships.
Bertal, who won a gold medal at the African Championships in Yaoundé in 2023 and in Kinshasa in 2024, triumphed in the final against Turkish competitor Hatice Akbas, the 2022 world champion and Olympic silver medalist at the Paris 2024 Games, with a score of 5 to 2.
In the semifinals, the Moroccan boxer had eliminated Serbian fighter Sara Cirkovic by a close score of 4 to 3.
Her compatriot Hasna Larti earned a bronze medal at these championships, which took place from March 8 to 16, after advancing to the semifinals (in the 75-81 kg category) at the expense of Bulgarian Victoriya Kebikava, securing victory by RSC (Referee Stops Contest).
In the semifinals, the Moroccan boxer faced a setback against Russian Saltanat Medenova, losing by unanimous decision (5-0).
