Turkey: Powerful 6.2 Magnitude Earthquake Strikes Off Istanbul

A powerful 6.2 magnitude earthquake, with its epicenter located in the Sea of Marmara, shook Istanbul on Wednesday, though authorities reported no casualties or damage.

According to Turkey’s National Disaster Management Agency (AFAD) and Interior Minister Ali Yerlikaya, “a 6.2 earthquake occurred off the coast of Silivri in the Sea of Marmara” shortly before 1:00 PM (10:00 AM GMT).

At least two tremors, occurring just fractions of a second apart, were strongly felt across all neighborhoods of the vast city, which is home to 16 million residents and is situated along the Bosphorus and the Sea of Marmara.
