Parliamentary Committees of the Pan-African Parliament Kick Off in Johannesburg

The work of the Permanent Committees of the Pan-African Parliament (PAP), the legislative body of the African Union, officially commenced this Monday at the institution’s headquarters in Johannesburg, South Africa, with the participation of Moroccan deputies.

The Moroccan Parliament is represented at this session by several members, including Laila Dahi from the National Rally of Independents (RNI), Khadija Arouhal from the Party of Progress and Socialism (PPS), Aydi Youssef from the Socialist Union of Popular Forces (USFP), Abdessamad Haiker from the Justice and Development Party (PJD), and Hanaa Benkhair from the General Union of Moroccan Workers (UGTM).

These meetings, which will continue until February 28, 2025, are organized under the theme of the African Union’s 2025 agenda: "Justice for Africans and people of African descent through reparations."

The agenda includes several meetings, including one with the 6th Bureau of the PAP and the ambassadors and permanent representatives of African nations accredited to South Africa, as well as a joint meeting of the PAP Bureau with the Permanent Committee offices and caucuses.

Additional sessions are planned, such as discussions by the Committee on Rules, Privileges, and Discipline, along with an orientation meeting for new members of the pan-African legislative body. Regional caucus sessions will also complement this work.

The PAP serves as an advisory assembly of the African Union, bringing together deputies from the member states. Established in accordance with Article 5 of the Constitutive Act of the African Union, it was officially inaugurated on March 18, 2004. Each member state is represented by five parliamentarians from both the ruling majority and the opposition, including at least one woman, elected or appointed by their national parliaments.
