Iran Announces Full Reopening of the Strait of Hormuz

Iran Reopens Strait of Hormuz to International Maritime Navigation Amid Ongoing Ceasefire

On Friday, Iran announced the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz for international maritime navigation, valid for the remaining duration of the ongoing ceasefire in the Middle East, following a truce agreement between Israel and Hezbollah in Lebanon.

A Decision Tied to Regional Ceasefire

Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi stated in a message posted on social media platform X that "the passage of all commercial vessels through the Strait of Hormuz will be fully authorized for the remaining duration of the ceasefire." He clarified that this would occur "via the coordinated mechanism announced by the Iranian Ports and Maritime Organization."

Duration Not Specified

The minister did not specify the exact duration of this measure, amidst a backdrop of several ceasefire arrangements in the region. A two-week ceasefire has been in effect between Iran and the United States since April 7 and 8, while a ten-day ceasefire came into effect in Lebanon from Thursday night into Friday.

A Strategic Passage for Global Trade

The Strait of Hormuz is one of the world’s most strategic maritime routes for oil transport, meaning that any decision regarding it has a direct impact on energy markets and international trade.
