Senegal Advances to the Semifinals

Senegal secured its spot in the semi-finals of the Africa Cup of Nations (Morocco-2025) on Friday night at the Grand Stade de Tanger, overcoming Mali with a narrow 1-0 victory after an intense and hard-fought match.

An Engaging Start to the Match

From the very first minutes, both teams demonstrated their intentions, attempting to set the pace and exploit speed on the flanks to destabilize the opposing defenses. The contest in midfield quickly proved to be crucial.

Controversial Referee Decision in the 3rd Minute

In the 3rd minute, Mali appealed for a penalty after contact between Kalidou Koulibaly and Lassine Sinayoko, Mali’s top scorer. However, the referee deemed the action non-foul and allowed play to continue, which sparked protests from the Malian side.

Iliman Ndiaye Capitalizes on a Critical Error

The dynamics of the match shifted in the 27th minute when Malian goalkeeper Djigui Diarra made a costly error while attempting to clear the ball. Iliman Ndiaye seized the opportunity to score the only goal of the game, putting the Lions of Teranga in the lead.

Key Expulsion Before Half-Time

Just before the half-time whistle, in the 3rd minute of stoppage time, Mali was reduced to ten men after its captain Yves Bissouma received a second yellow card. This marked a major turning point in the high-intensity encounter.

A Second Half Under Pressure

In front of more than 32,000 spectators, Mali sought to respond at the start of the second half by constructing more structured attacks, especially down the left flank. However, Senegal’s goalkeeper Édouard Mendy remained alert, thwarting the opposition’s efforts.

Tactical Choices and Score Management

Both coaches made several tactical changes in the second half. Senegal intensified its pressing to prevent any quick transitions from Mali, while the Eagles had to deal with the injury of Amadou Haidara, who was replaced in the 55th minute.

An Anticipated Clash in the Semi-Finals

With this controlled victory, Senegal qualifies for the semi-finals of AFCON 2025 and will face the winner of the Egypt – Ivory Coast duel, promising a high-stakes showdown in the final four.
