Sinking of a Russian Oil and Gas Tanker in the Mediterranean Following Major Explosions and Fire

Russian Gas Tanker Sinks Off Libyan Coast

The Libyan Authority for Ports and Maritime Transport announced on Tuesday that a Russian gas tanker sank in waters between Libya and Malta following sudden explosions that ignited a large fire onboard.

Explosions and Fire Lead to Sinking

According to a maritime advisory deemed “critical” by Libyan authorities, the ship issued a distress call before the explosions occurred, triggering a fire that ultimately led to the complete sinking of the Arctic Meta Gaz.

The tanker was carrying approximately 62,000 tons of liquefied natural gas and sank about 130 nautical miles north of the port of Syrte, located in north-central Libya.

Successful Evacuation of Crew

A cargo vessel closest to the scene was dispatched and successfully rescued all 30 crew members, with no serious injuries reported.

Alert for Navigation and Environmental Safety

The Libyan Authority has urged all passing ships to avoid the sinking site due to the potential presence of wreckage, the size and depth of which have not yet been determined. They also highlighted the risk of leaks from the ship’s tanks containing flammable or polluting substances, posing a threat to navigation and marine environmental safety.

This incident underscores the risks faced by gas transporters in the Mediterranean and highlights the urgent need to enhance safety measures and maritime surveillance.
