Reviving Essaouira’s Cultural Heritage: A Focus on the Sidi Mohammed Ben Abdallah Museum
André Azoulay, the founding president of the Essaouira-Mogador Association, stated on Monday in Rabat that the revitalization and re-establishment of the Sidi Mohammed Ben Abdallah Museum will strengthen the cultural and artistic infrastructure at the heart of Essaouira’s vibrant economic and social dynamics.
A Synergy Among Cultural Institutions
In his remarks, alongside the Minister of Youth, Culture, and Communication, Mohamed Mehdi Bensaid, the president of the National Museums Foundation, Mehdi Qotbi, and the president of the Essaouira municipal council, Azoulay praised the cooperation among these institutions in providing “a new breath” to this historic museum.
Highlighting the Essaouira School of Arts
Azoulay also emphasized the prominence of the Essaouira School of Fine Arts, noting that it occupies an important place both in Morocco and internationally today. He stressed the importance of creating a dedicated space for artists who have significantly contributed to the creative richness of this institution.
Increasing International Recognition
He reminded attendees that works resulting from this artistic movement are now featured in major Western museums and private collections, showcasing their global recognition.
Azoulay concluded by highlighting the success of the "House of Memory" project, inaugurated by King Mohammed VI in 2020, which welcomed over 120,000 visitors in 2025. He noted that Essaouira’s cultural dynamic successfully combines heritage, cultural diversity, and artistic innovation.
