Macron to Meet Lebanese Prime Minister Amid Regional Tensions
French President Emmanuel Macron is scheduled to meet Lebanese Prime Minister Nawaf Salam on Tuesday at the Élysée Palace, against a backdrop of significant tensions in the Near and Middle East.
According to the French presidency, this meeting will reaffirm France’s commitment to the complete respect of the ceasefire in Lebanon, as well as its dedication to the country’s territorial integrity. Paris also aims to support the efforts of Lebanese authorities to ensure national sovereignty and the state’s monopoly on arms.
The discussions will also address humanitarian aid for displaced populations and the pressing need to continue economic and financial reforms to facilitate Lebanon’s reconstruction and restore stability in a particularly challenging environment.
On a regional level, both leaders are expected to reiterate their commitment to peace, diplomacy, and sustainable security within the region.
Additionally, Emmanuel Macron is anticipated to address the attack on French soldiers serving with the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL), which resulted in the death of Sergeant Florian Montorio. The French president will urge Lebanese authorities to thoroughly investigate this incident and hold those responsible accountable.
France emphasizes that the UNIFIL soldiers, who are operating under complex conditions to support stability and facilitate humanitarian aid, must never be targeted.
