Morocco Calls for a Lasting Ceasefire in Gaza and a Renewed Peace Process in the Middle East

On Monday in New York, Morocco, under the leadership of His Majesty King Mohammed VI, who also chairs the Al-Quds Committee, expressed its support for a sustainable ceasefire in Gaza while emphasizing the need to revive a genuine peace process in the Middle East. During an address to the UN Security Council, Morocco’s ambassador, Omar Hilale, stressed that the ceasefire agreement should not only facilitate the reconstruction of Gaza but also pave the way for enduring peace, underscoring the establishment of a Palestinian state based on the 1967 borders, with East Jerusalem as its capital, living peacefully alongside Israel.

The ambassador welcomed the implementation of the ceasefire agreement, highlighting the progress made towards ending hostilities and protecting civilians. He expressed hope that this agreement would be fully respected and would help stop attacks against civilians, release hostages and detainees, enable the return of displaced persons, and ensure adequate and smooth humanitarian access.

Recalling the words of His Majesty King Mohammed VI, President of the Al-Quds Committee, particularly in his recent Royal Message at the Arab Summit, Omar Hilale emphasized the importance of avoiding a transition from one crisis to another. He reaffirmed Morocco’s longstanding position in favor of the Palestinian cause, which he considers crucial for peace and stability in the Middle East.

In this context, he clarified that Gaza must be an integral part of the independent Palestinian territories, under the authority of the Palestinian National Authority. He also noted that unilateral Israeli actions in Al-Quds exacerbate tensions, calling for the preservation of the legal, historical, and demographic status of the holy city, which is a symbol for the three monotheistic religions.

Omar Hilale further highlighted the significant role played by the Al-Quds Committee in support of the Palestinian people, especially through the Bayt Mal Al-Quds Agency, and praised the work of the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA), which has been a cornerstone of humanitarian action in the region since its inception.

Regarding Lebanon, the ambassador reaffirmed Morocco’s support, under the guidance of His Majesty the King, for Lebanon’s territorial integrity and sovereignty. As for Syria, he reiterated the Kingdom’s clear stance in favor of the integrity and sovereignty of Syria, as well as the right of its people to choose their future and aspire to peace and development.
