Morocco Ranks 20th Globally in Maritime Connectivity: A Confirmed Rise in Logistics Power

Morocco’s Rise in International Maritime Trade

Morocco continues its ascent in international maritime trade. According to the Regular Maritime Connectivity Index (LSCI) 2026 published by UNCTAD, the Kingdom is now ranked 20th globally with a score of 259.33 points.

This ranking confirms Morocco’s gradual repositioning as a strategic logistics platform linking Africa, Europe, and the Americas amidst a reconfiguration of global trade flows.

An Index Measuring Integration into Global Networks

The LSCI assesses the degree of countries’ integration into international maritime transport networks, taking into account several criteria, including the number of regular shipping lines, ship capacity, services offered by shipping companies, port performance, and direct connections with other countries.

In this ranking, the top positions remain dominated by major maritime and logistics powers such as China, South Korea, Singapore, and the United States.

Tanger Med: A Central Engine of Logistic Transformation

This Moroccan progress is largely driven by the development of the Tanger Med port complex, which has profoundly transformed the Kingdom’s role in global logistics chains.

Located at the Strait of Gibraltar, this hub has established itself as one of the main container ports in the Mediterranean and a key player in African maritime trade.

A Structural Evolution in Morocco’s Positioning

Before the emergence of Tanger Med, Morocco held modest positions in international maritime connectivity rankings.

The strengthening of its port infrastructures has allowed the Kingdom to enhance its integration into global trade networks and significantly improve its logistical competitiveness.

Direct Economic Impacts on Competitiveness

The improvement in maritime connectivity has a direct impact on the national economy, particularly by reducing logistical costs and enhancing the fluidity of supply chains.

It also contributes to increasing Morocco’s attractiveness for foreign industrial investments, especially in the automotive, aeronautics, and export-oriented industries.

A Strategic Positioning on a Regional Scale

Beyond the ranking, Morocco confirms its ambition to become a regional transshipment and distribution hub between Europe, Africa, and the Atlantic.

This strategy relies on continued investments in port infrastructures, logistical corridors, as well as road and rail networks, thereby consolidating its role in global trade.
