Morocco Secures First Seat at the 81st UN General Assembly

Morocco has been chosen to occupy the first seat at the 81st session of the United Nations General Assembly, which is set to take place in September 2026 in New York.

A Symbolic Recognition for Moroccan Diplomacy

Morocco’s selection for this prestigious position is a significant acknowledgment of the Kingdom’s role within the main deliberative body of the international organization, where all 193 member states are represented. This decision came during the traditional drawing conducted by UN Secretary-General António Guterres.

A Procedure Aligned with UN Traditions

In accordance with UN practice, the country designated to hold the first seat in the General Assembly hall is selected through a lottery before the start of each new session. Stéphane Dujarric, spokesperson for the Secretary-General, announced that Morocco had been granted this honor for the upcoming session. While the position primarily has a ceremonial purpose, it symbolizes visibility for the country within the multilateral institution.

Election of the President of the 81st Session

During the same plenary session, member states elected Khalilur Rahman to serve as the President of the 81st General Assembly session. Several countries were also designated for the vice-presidencies, including the United States, China, France, the United Kingdom, Russia, Egypt, and Gabon.

An Important Session in September 2026

The UN General Assembly remains the principal forum for multilateral dialogue globally. It allows member states to discuss major international issues, approve the organization’s budget, and participate in the election of several UN bodies. The 81st session will officially commence in September 2026 in New York.
