The Port of Safi Sees a Significant Decline in Maritime Fishing Activity in 2026

Coastal and Artisanal Fishing Activity at the Port of Safi Declines in Early 2026

The coastal and artisanal fishing activity at the Port of Safi has seen a significant decline during the first seven months of 2026, marked by a considerable drop in both landed volumes and their commercial value compared to the same period last year.

According to the latest data from the National Fisheries Office (ONP), the quantities landed at the Port of Safi reached approximately 19,358 tonnes by the end of July 2026, representing a 34% decrease year-on-year.

This decline also extends to the value of the landed products. Commercial revenue has plummeted by 40%, totaling around 131.78 million dirhams, compared to over 221.2 million dirhams during the same period in 2025.

Breaking it down further, pelagic fish have contributed significantly to this decrease. The landed volumes shrank by 34%, amounting to about 18,260 tonnes, down from 27,728 tonnes a year earlier.

This contraction has been accompanied by a substantial decrease in their commercial value, which fell by 43%, reaching nearly 57.2 million dirhams, down from approximately 100.84 million dirhams during the same period in 2025.

In contrast, white fish exhibited a positive trend. Landed volumes increased by 10%, totaling around 629 tonnes, compared to 574 tonnes a year prior.

The commercial value of these captures also saw an uptick of 6%, reaching nearly 34.49 million dirhams, as opposed to over 32.65 million dirhams during the same timeframe in 2025.

Mollusks, on the other hand, experienced a particularly sharp decline. The quantities landed dropped by 52%, limiting them to around 458 tonnes, while their commercial value fell by 55%, totaling nearly 38.56 million dirhams.

Crustaceans have also followed a downward trend. The landed volumes decreased by 30%, down to just 11 tonnes, with their commercial value recorded at over 1.51 million dirhams, marking a 14% decline year-on-year.

These figures underscore the contrasting performances among different categories of seafood at the Port of Safi. While pelagic fish continue to account for the bulk of landed volumes, white fish, by contrast, have shown more favorable developments during the first seven months of 2026.
