KGHM Strengthens Its Interest in Morocco’s Mining Potential

Polish mining group KGHM Polska Miedź continues to engage in discussions with the National Office of Hydrocarbons and Mines (ONHYM) regarding the opportunities that Morocco’s mining potential could offer. A recent meeting held on October 5, 2026, confirms the ongoing dialogue, a few months after the signing of a memorandum of understanding involving KGHM, ONHYM, and Moroccan group Managem.

This initiative comes at a time when copper and other strategic raw materials are increasingly vital in global industrial chains, fueled by electrification, the development of electrical networks, and investments in renewable energy.

KGHM Explores Opportunities in Morocco

KGHM Polska Miedź ranks among the world’s leading producers of copper and silver. The Polish group has an integrated supply chain covering various stages, from exploration and extraction of minerals to processing and production of refined metals.

Its expertise also encompasses several raw materials considered strategic for industry. In this context, Morocco represents a new area of interest for KGHM, primarily due to its geological potential and historical experience in the mining sector.

At this stage, however, the Polish group does not have any operational mining activities in Morocco. Its presence is currently linked to the assessment of opportunities and discussions with key Moroccan players in the sector.

A Memorandum of Understanding Signed in March 2026

The collaboration between KGHM and Moroccan mining stakeholders materialized in March 2026 with the signing of a memorandum of understanding among KGHM, ONHYM, and Managem.

This agreement serves as the framework for cooperation, within which the three partners are exploring various avenues for developing raw material projects in Morocco. However, it does not yet signal the announcement of a definitive industrial mining project.

The meeting on October 5, therefore, is a continuation of this initiative and reflects the parties’ commitment to identifying and evaluating opportunities that may present economic and geological interest.

The Expertise of ONHYM at the Heart of Discussions

ONHYM plays a central role in this cooperation due to its exploration expertise and understanding of Morocco’s subsurface. The office acts as a natural interlocutor for an international group seeking to assess new mining territories.

KGHM contributes its know-how in the exploration, operation, and processing of minerals, with particularly significant expertise in copper. The pooling of these skills is expected to examine potential synergies between Morocco’s geological potential and the Polish group’s industrial capabilities.

Managem’s involvement adds a national industrial dimension to this cooperation. The Moroccan group has experience in the exploration, exploitation, and valorization of various mineral resources, both domestically and internationally.

Copper at the Core of Energy Transition Challenges

KGHM’s interest in Morocco also occurs against an international backdrop marked by increasing demand for copper. This metal plays an essential role in electrical networks, industrial equipment, energy infrastructures, electric vehicles, and various technologies related to energy transition.

For major mining groups, access to new resources constitutes a strategic challenge. Geographic diversification of exploration activities can identify new deposits that may ultimately enhance raw material supply capacities.

At the same time, Morocco is looking to better capitalize on its mining potential and further develop downstream activities from extraction. The potential realization of a KGHM investment could thus bring additional capital, technology, and expertise to the Moroccan sector.

No KGHM Mines Announced at This Stage

Caution is advised regarding the Polish group’s prospects in Morocco. Discussions with ONHYM and Managem are currently focused on identifying and evaluating mining opportunities.

At this point, no KGHM industrial project has been announced as operational or firmly committed in Morocco. The next steps will depend notably on the results of exploration efforts and the potential confirmation of economically viable resources.

If evaluations prove conclusive, cooperation could pave the way for new projects in strategic raw materials and strengthen ties between the Moroccan mining sector and one of Europe’s leading copper-focused groups.
