Balearia is preparing a 100% electric maritime connection between Tangier and Tarifa.

The Spanish shipping company Balearia is taking a significant step in its decarbonization project for maritime transport between Morocco and Europe. The shipping line announced on Sunday the launching of its first fully electric fast ferry, set to connect Tangier City and Tarifa in southern Spain starting in the summer of 2027. This initiative aims to establish the first green maritime corridor between Europe and Africa.

Two Electric Ferries to Connect Morocco and Spain

As part of this initiative, Balearia plans to introduce two catamarans powered exclusively by electricity. These vessels are designed to make the crossings between Tangier and Tarifa without direct carbon dioxide (CO₂) emissions, while also reducing noise pollution associated with navigation.

The first vessel has just reached an important milestone in its construction with its launch. The second catamaran is still under construction and is expected to join the fleet after the summer of 2027, according to the company’s announcement.

The project is not solely focused on building new ships. It also includes the electrification of the port infrastructures in Tangier City and Tarifa, in order to enable the operation of this maritime route reliant on fully electric propulsion.

An Investment of Over €200 Million

To bring this ambition to fruition, Balearia plans a total investment exceeding €200 million. This budget will cover the construction of both ferries as well as the necessary work for the electrification of the involved ports.

The company’s president, Adolfo Utor, described the launching of the first ship as a strategic step towards the launch of the route in 2027. According to him, this progress brings Balearia closer to implementing what he presents as the first 100% electric maritime link between Europe and Africa.

The leader also believes that this project anticipates the net zero emission target set for 2050 by several decades. He underscores the role of technological innovation, investment, and industrial cooperation in accelerating the energy transition of the maritime sector.

An 87-Meter Catamaran with 14 MWh Batteries

Balearia’s first electric ferry features technical specifications designed to meet the requirements of fast transport for passengers and vehicles on a short maritime route. At 87 meters long, the catamaran has an aluminum structure designed to combine lightweight and durability.

It is also equipped with a battery system offering a storage capacity of 14 megawatt-hours (MWh), intended to power its electric propulsion. This technology is expected to ensure crossings without direct CO₂ emissions during navigation.

However, the success of the project will depend on the establishment of port charging infrastructure and operational conditions for the line. The goal is to provide an efficient maritime service while reducing the environmental footprint of travel between the two shores of the Strait of Gibraltar.

Tangier-Tarifa: A Strategic Corridor for Sustainable Mobility

The link between Tangier and Tarifa occupies a strategic position in the exchanges between Morocco and Spain. Transitioning to fully electric propulsion could represent a significant advancement for the decarbonization of short maritime routes, provided that the vessels and port facilities are operational according to the proposed schedule.

With this program, Balearia aims to combine modernization of maritime transport, reduction of direct emissions, and development of appropriate energy infrastructures. The expected launch from the summer of 2027 will mark a new milestone for maritime connections between the Kingdom and Europe, in a context where transport actors are seeking to accelerate their transition toward more sustainable solutions.
