Heavy Rains Hit Eastern Spain, Causing Flooding and Disruptions
Strong rainfall has struck several regions in eastern Spain, leading to flooding, transportation disruptions, and at least one confirmed fatality.
On Thursday, September 17, rescue teams in Catalonia discovered the body of a man who had been swept away by floodwaters in Olivella, located approximately 40 kilometers west of Barcelona. According to emergency services, the victim was driving a vehicle that was engulfed by the surging waters.
Spain’s meteorological agency had issued warnings for heavy precipitation across various areas in the east of the country, temporarily raising the alert level to red in Barcelona due to the risk of flooding.
In Barcelona, multiple metro stations were closed, and several bus lines were redirected as numerous streets became flooded. Regional train services were also disrupted, while El Prat Airport reported delays and flight cancellations.
The Catalonia emergency services received over 850 calls related to the severe weather, resulting in more than 500 interventions. Authorities urged residents in Catalonia and Valencia to avoid non-essential travel.
In the neighboring Valencia region, several municipalities recorded over 70 millimeters of rain in just half an hour. This area had already suffered from severe flooding in 2024, which resulted in more than 230 deaths.
In Valencia, all metro lines were suspended, and the airport was temporarily closed due to flooding, leading to the diversion of 12 flights.
In the southeastern part of the country, more than 20 municipalities in Almería and the Murcia region also canceled classes as a precautionary measure.
