Marie-Louise Eta: First Female Coach in the Bundesliga

The German club Union Berlin has announced the appointment of Marie-Louise Eta as the head coach of the first team until the end of the season, marking a historic decision in Bundesliga.
A Historic Appointment
Previously the coach of the U19 team, Marie-Louise Eta becomes the first woman to lead a top-flight team in Germany, representing a significant advance for European football.
Challenging Sporting Context
This appointment comes after the dismissal of Steffen Baumgart, following a 1-3 defeat against FC Heidenheim, the last place team in the standings.
The Berlin club is experiencing a difficult period, recording only two victories in 14 matches since the winter break.
Mission: Staying in the Bundesliga
Appointed on an interim basis, Marie-Louise Eta has the primary task of ensuring Union Berlin stays in the top tier.
“Staying in the Bundesliga is not guaranteed yet. I am happy with this demanding mission,” she stated.
Restructuring of the Coaching Staff
The club has also terminated its collaboration with assistant coaches Danilo de Souza and Kevin McKenna, amid a backdrop of results deemed insufficient.
A Concerning Situation
General Director Horst Heldt acknowledged that the second half of the season has been “absolutely disappointing,” emphasizing the urgency of accumulating points to avoid relegation.
A Turning Point for the Club
This decision marks a turning point for Union Berlin, which hopes to rejuvenate its season with this historic appointment.
