The World Bank Launches “Water Forward” Initiative to Enhance Water Security for One Billion People by 2030

The World Bank Group announced on Wednesday the launch of a new global initiative called "Water Forward," in partnership with multilateral development banks, development finance institutions, and other international partners. The aim is to enhance water security for approximately one billion people by 2030.

A Global Platform for Coordinating Policies and Financing
According to a statement from the World Bank, this platform seeks to align policy reforms, financing, and partnerships to expand access to reliable water services and strengthen the resilience of systems against droughts and floods.

Water: A Vital Issue for Development
The World Bank emphasizes that water is a crucial pillar for health, food security, and energy. It supports around 1.7 billion jobs globally, while nearly 4 billion people suffer from water scarcity.

Supporting Developing Countries and Stimulating Investment
This initiative aims to remove barriers that hinder investments in the water sector across many countries. It will particularly assist developing nations in establishing more reliable and resilient water systems, thereby promoting productivity, livelihoods, and private investment.

Additionally, it will support reforms aimed at strengthening institutions, improving the financial performance of the sector, and developing bankable projects.

Ambitious Goals for 2030
The World Bank Group has reaffirmed its commitment to ensuring water security for 400 million people by 2030. The Water Forward initiative is expected to extend these services to over one billion beneficiaries through the collective commitments of international partners.
