France Reaffirms Its Strong Support for Morocco’s Sovereignty over the Sahara

In a statement released this Tuesday by the French Ministry of Europe and Foreign Affairs, following a discussion between French Foreign Minister Jean-Noël Barrot and his Moroccan counterpart Nasser Bourita, France reaffirmed its “unalterable” stance on the question of Moroccan Sahara.

The statement recalls comments made by President Emmanuel Macron in his letter to His Majesty King Mohammed VI dated July 30, 2024, affirming that “the present and future of Western Sahara falls within the framework of Moroccan sovereignty.” French diplomacy thus emphasizes the stability of its position and its commitment to act coherently, both nationally and internationally.

Jean-Noël Barrot also reiterated France’s clear and steadfast support for the autonomy plan proposed by Morocco, deeming it “the only viable framework to achieve a political solution” to the conflict.

Highlighting the growing international consensus around this Moroccan initiative, the minister assured that France intends to play an active role in this momentum.

Finally, the statement concludes by reaffirming France’s commitment to supporting Morocco’s efforts in economic and social development in its Southern provinces, recalling existing initiatives and its desire to strengthen this cooperative dynamic.
