Rabat Hosts AMASA 2025 on Water and Green Hydrogen in Africa

The annual meeting of the African Academies of Sciences (AMASA 2025), organized by the Network of African Science Academies (NASAC), kicked off on Wednesday in Rabat under the theme:
“Water and Green Hydrogen: Pathways to Sustainable Development in Africa.”

This significant scientific gathering, held at the invitation of the Hassan II Academy of Sciences and Technologies, brings together nearly sixty African experts, including about thirty representatives from science academies. The goal is to formulate concrete and scientifically grounded proposals for sustainable, inclusive development that meets the continent’s needs.

Water and Green Hydrogen at the Heart of Africa’s Energy Vision

The selection of this theme reflects Morocco’s commitment to issues related to energy transition, renewable energies, water desalination, research on green hydrogen, and sustainable water management solutions.
These topics are currently central to energy and climate security in Africa and are generating increasing interest from the scientific community.

Scientific Panels Focused on Water Security and Governance

The conference program includes:

  • Panels dedicated to water security and management,

  • Sessions addressing the links between water, energy, and climate,

  • Strategic discussions around water policy and governance of natural resources.

In parallel, NASAC is also holding its General Assembly, reinforcing institutional cooperation among African scientific academies.

A Committed African Network for Science Serving Development

Established in 2001 as an independent African forum, NASAC now encompasses 32 science academies.
Morocco, which held the presidency of the network for eight consecutive years, currently occupies the vice-presidency.

Convinced that science is a crucial lever for economic, social, and cultural development in Africa, NASAC works to:

  • Formulate scientific recommendations on the continent’s strategic challenges,

  • Organize meetings between experts,

  • Promote the development of scientific and technological cooperation among African countries,
in perfect harmony with His Majesty King Mohammed VI’s vision for an innovative and resilient Africa.
