Violence in Washington: 500 Soldiers Deployed Following Armed Attack

New Surge of Violence in the Heart of the Capital

A new episode of armed violence has reignited tensions in Washington. Two soldiers were critically injured by gunfire on Wednesday in the heart of downtown, prompting Pentagon Chief Pete Hegseth to announce the deployment of an additional 500 National Guard troops.

Immediate Response from the Pentagon

From the Dominican Republic, where he was on an official trip, Hegseth condemned the attack, stating it “strengthens the government’s determination” to secure Washington. With these reinforcements, over 2,500 National Guard members will now be mobilized in the capital as part of an initiative launched last summer by President Donald Trump to combat urban crime.

Assailant Quickly Neutralized

According to the city’s mayor, Muriel Bowser, the two soldiers were targeted by an armed man who approached them before opening fire. Identified by several media outlets as an Afghan national, the assailant was shot and subsequently apprehended.

Reinforcements from Across the Country

National Guard units from several states are already deployed in Washington as well as in other major cities, supporting local forces faced with a significant increase in insecurity.

Condition of the Injured Soldiers

The injured soldiers belong to the West Virginia National Guard. Their governor, Patrick Morrisey, initially announced their deaths but later retracted his statement, citing conflicting information regarding their medical condition.
