U17 World Cup: Portugal Crowned World Champion After Victory Over Austria (1-0)
Portugal has claimed the title of U17 World Cup champion by defeating Austria 1-0 in the final held Thursday night at the Khalifa International Stadium in Doha.
Anisio Cabral netted the only goal of the match in the 32nd minute, assisted by Duarte Cunha, further showcasing Portugal’s dominance in both offensive and defensive play throughout the match.
The Seleção das Quinas reached the final by overcoming Brazil in a penalty shootout (6-5) after a scoreless draw during regular time, marking the first time in its history that Portugal has reached the final of this competition.
With three previous participations, the last being in 2003, Portugal transformed its fortunes in Qatar, making history with this inaugural championship win.
Austria, led by prolific striker Johannes Moser, who was the tournament’s top scorer with eight goals, had not participated in the competition since 2013, when they were eliminated in the group stage.
Before this defeat in the final, Austria had a perfect record, winning all their matches in this Qatari World Cup. They advanced to the final by defeating Italy 2-0, with both goals scored by Johannes Moser.
In the third-place match, Italy triumphed over Brazil, winning 4-2 on penalties after their encounter ended in a goalless draw at Aspire Zone’s Field No. 7.
