Launch of the First Robotic Surgery Platform at Mohammed VI University Hospital in Agadir

A Leading Platform for Medical Innovation in Africa In alignment with the insightful vision of His Majesty King Mohammed VI, may God assist him, to enhance the Kingdom’s health sovereignty and modernize the national health system, the Ministry of Health and Social Protection has officially launched robotic surgery services at the Mohammed VI University Hospital in Agadir.
This significant advancement marks a first on the African continent through the integration of the advanced “Revo-i” robotic surgery system within a public institution. It solidifies Morocco’s positioning as a leading African platform for medical innovation and reflects the Kingdom’s commitment to modernizing the healthcare system and ensuring equitable access to cutting-edge medical technologies.
This launch has been realized through the successful execution of initial robotic surgical interventions. These operations were carried out entirely by Moroccan medical, paramedical, and technical teams, adhering strictly to existing medical, organizational, and safety standards.
This achievement highlights the high level of competence among national human resources and confirms the strategic choice to invest in training, knowledge transfer, and the development of Moroccan expertise within public health institutions.
The project relies on the use of the state-of-the-art “Revo-i” surgical robot, which offers high-definition three-dimensional (3D) vision and precise control over surgical actions. This technology enhances the safety and accuracy of procedures, minimizes postoperative complications, and promotes faster recovery for patients. It is emphasized that the surgeon remains fully responsible for the surgical act, with the robot serving as an advanced assistance tool for medical performance.
The adoption of this technology is occurring in a progressive and structured initial phase, ensuring optimal and secure use across several surgical specialties under the supervision of recognized national experts, including:
General Surgery, under the direction of Professor MEHDI SOUFI,
Gynecology-Obstetrics, supervised by Professor EL FAROUQI ABDALLAH,
Urology, led by Professor IMAD.
Implementing this project required assembling a highly qualified multidisciplinary Moroccan team, comprising surgeons, anesthesiologists, nursing teams, and specialized technicians who underwent a certified training program combining theoretical and practical instruction at Mohammed VI University Hospital in Agadir. This approach aims to ensure the optimal and secure operation of the “Revo-i” system while sustainably strengthening national competencies.
This strategic public investment project amounts to 26,349,840 dirhams. It reflects the Kingdom’s firm intention to bring highly specialized care closer to its citizens, reduce medical travel, and strengthen healthcare offerings at both regional and national levels.
Through this achievement, the Mohammed VI University Hospital in Agadir establishes itself as a leading institution for medical innovation, scientific research, and advanced healthcare training, serving the health needs of citizens while respecting the principle of territorial equity in access to specialized care, particularly in the Souss-Massa region and throughout the Kingdom.
