The Pentagon Prepares for Weeks of Ground Operations in Iran Amid U.S. Military Buildup in the Middle East
The Pentagon is gearing up to launch weeks of ground operations in Iran as the United States bolsters its military presence in the Middle East, according to a report from the Washington Post on Saturday, citing American officials.
These operations are not expected to escalate into a large-scale invasion of Iran but would involve incursions into Iranian territory by both special forces and other military personnel, these officials noted, speaking on condition of anonymity.
As of Saturday, it remained unclear whether President Donald Trump intended to approve any part of the options presented by the Pentagon or whether he would choose to forgo them altogether.
This news comes at a time when the U.S. posture in the Middle East is being strengthened by the arrival of the amphibious assault ship USS Tripoli in the region, as announced by the U.S. military on Saturday.
This helicopter carrier is leading a naval group that includes “approximately 3,500” sailors and Marines, according to U.S. Central Command (Centcom).
The announcement of the ship’s deployment follows remarks made by U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio, who stated on Friday that the U.S. could achieve its objectives concerning Iran without resorting to the deployment of ground troops.
In recent days, several American media outlets have reported that President Trump is considering sending at least 10,000 additional troops to the Middle East soon.
