The European Union Ready to Respond to U.S. Tariffs on Steel and Aluminum

The European Union has announced that it will take action to protect its interests if the United States imposes tariffs on steel and aluminum imports from its 27 member countries, the European Commission stated on Monday.

In a statement, the European executive reacted to the announcement made on Sunday by President Donald Trump regarding his intention to implement a 25% tariff on all steel and aluminum imports, without specifying when these measures would take effect.

“The EU sees no justification for imposing tariffs on its exports. We will respond to protect the interests of European businesses, workers, and consumers against such unjustified measures,” the European Commission affirmed.

According to Brussels, these tariffs would be “illegal and economically counterproductive,” especially because of the “deeply integrated” production chains between the EU and the United States, which have developed through transatlantic trade and investments.

The Commission added that the imposition of these tariffs on American imports would have negative repercussions for American citizens, increasing costs for businesses and fueling inflation. Furthermore, such measures would create economic uncertainty and disrupt the efficiency of global markets.

“All steel arriving in the United States will be subject to a 25% tariff,” Donald Trump told reporters aboard Air Force One while en route to New Orleans for the Super Bowl, noting that this tax would also apply to aluminum.
