Cosumar Launches LCO₂: An Innovative CO₂ Unit in Casablanca
The Cosumar Group has taken a significant step in its industrial strategy with the launch of the LCO₂ project in Casablanca, a facility dedicated to the production of food-grade liquid carbon dioxide. This unprecedented initiative in the region is part of a broader commitment to innovation, industrial valorization, and enhancing the group’s operations.
The project is based on the recovery and transformation of CO₂ produced from the group’s industrial processes, aiming to generate gas with a purity exceeding 99.9%. This food-grade liquid CO₂ meets the strictest international standards, including those of ISBT and EIGA, ensuring high levels of quality and safety.
This new activity will transform an industrial byproduct into a strategic resource for several key sectors, including food production, pharmaceuticals, cryogenics, agriculture, and seawater desalination.
With a total investment exceeding 500 million dirhams, this project marks a turning point in the policy of substituting imports. Until now, food-grade liquid CO₂ has been entirely imported into Morocco.
By developing local production integrated with its Casablanca refinery, Cosumar is helping to strengthen national industrial sovereignty while improving the competitiveness of the economic landscape.
The first phase of the project anticipates an annual capacity of 20,000 tons, with commissioning planned for the end of 2026.
Beyond its economic dimension, the LCO₂ project aligns with an ambitious environmental strategy. The valorization of carbon dioxide allows for the optimization of industrial processes, enhancement of energy efficiency, and reduction of the site’s carbon footprint.
This initiative is in line with the group’s commitments, which has already managed to reduce CO₂ emissions by 50% since 2016, further promoting a circular economy.
The Casablanca unit represents the first step in a broader program set to be deployed across other industrial sites within the group. Ultimately, Cosumar aims to produce green biogenic CO₂ derived from biomass, meeting the increasing market demand for sustainable solutions.
Through this project, the group underscores its commitment to positioning itself as an innovative, sustainable industrial player that creates long-term value.
