Germany: Forecasts of Sustained Energy Price Increases Due to Middle East Tensions

E.ON Predicts Continued Rise in Electricity and Gas Prices Due to Ongoing Middle East Tensions

The German energy group E.ON anticipates a persistent rise in electricity and gas prices over the long term, attributing this trend to ongoing tensions in the Middle East, which continue to affect global energy markets.

A Return to Previous Price Levels is Unlikely

Philipp Thon, the CEO of E.ON Energie Deutschland, stated that the price levels observed before the military escalation are unlikely to return quickly. He believes that energy markets will remain sustainably elevated above pre-crisis levels.

Significant Increase in Wholesale Prices

Thon noted that energy prices have experienced a temporary surge this year, with increases of 75% for gas and 35% for electricity. Wholesale contracts for the next year are also showing price hikes of approximately 60% for gas and 20% for electricity.

Short-Term Fluctuations Hard to Pass On Immediately

The executive emphasized that short-term fluctuations in the market cannot be directly passed on to end consumer tariffs but highlighted a general upward trend in prices.

A Key Player in the German Energy Sector

E.ON is one of Germany’s main energy suppliers, managing millions of electricity and gas contracts and playing a crucial role in the nationwide management of electricity distribution networks.
