IEA Alert: The World Facing a Historic Threat to Energy Security
The International Energy Agency (IEA) has warned of a significant deterioration in global energy markets, stating that the current disruptions in oil flows represent one of the most serious crises ever recorded in the sector.
A Significant Decline in Global Supplies
IEA Executive Director Fatih Birol noted that the market has already lost approximately 13 million barrels per day in supply, emphasizing the extent of the imbalances affecting global energy distribution chains.
Europe Particularly Vulnerable
According to Birol, Europe is heavily reliant on jet fuel imports from the Middle East, which account for nearly 75% of its needs. These flows are currently facing substantial disruptions, raising concerns about the continent’s energy security.
Diversifying Supply Sources
In light of this situation, European countries are accelerating their diversification efforts, particularly by increasing imports from the United States and Nigeria to reduce their dependence on unstable regions.
Economic Risks and Impacts on Air Transportation
The IEA warns that the persistence of these tensions could lead to severe constraints in Europe, especially if securing sufficient fuel volumes becomes difficult. Measures to reduce air traffic may even be considered if the situation worsens further.
