Fouzia ELBAYED signs a new work on theater at the Paris International Book Fair.

Celebrating the 31st International Book Fair: Fouzia ELBAYED Unveils Her New Work
At the 31st edition of the International Book Fair, writer and art critic Fouzia ELBAYED presents her latest book entitled The Virtual Theatre: From Subversion to Transgression, recently published by L’Harmattan in Paris as part of the Univers théâtral series. This 132-page work delves into the transformative dynamics of contemporary theatre and the new forms of artistic expression shaped by digital technology.
Through this critical study, the author invites readers to immerse themselves in the mechanisms of subversion and transgression within the theatrical realm, whether it be classic or virtual. More than just an essay, the book represents the culmination of an extensive intellectual and academic journey, enriched by over three decades of research, artistic critique, and cultural engagement.
For Fouzia ELBAYED, theatre remains a unique space for truth, inquiry, and confrontation with human realities. She echoes the thoughts of Albert Camus, who stated that "the theatre is a place of truth," while also referencing Antoine Vitez and Jean-Louis Barrault, both of whom regarded this art form as a means to depict the fragility of existence and address human anxieties.
The book particularly explores theatre’s ability to challenge social, political, and aesthetic norms. It examines how contemporary theatrical forms, especially through digital technologies, can blur the lines between the real and the virtual, while also engaging the audience more deeply in the staged experience.
Central to this reflection are two great figures of modern theatre: August Strindberg and Jean Genet. Although they belong to different generations, both dramatists are united in this study for their innovative dimensions, creative power, and shared desire to challenge established conventions.
Through their works, the author highlights a theatre that becomes a space for contestation and the questioning of dominant norms. The dramatists in focus develop transgressive forms of writing and representation, addressing sensitive topics related to power, the body, sexuality, violence, and social institutions. In this context, theatre turns into a laboratory where artistic and symbolic boundaries are continuously pushed.
The book also emphasizes the impact of digital technology on contemporary creative dynamics. According to the author, new technologies offer unprecedented opportunities for participation, interactivity, and transformation of traditional theatrical codes, thus paving the way for new forms of virtual dramaturgy.
Through this publication, Fouzia ELBAYED aims to enrich critical thought surrounding theatre and to open new perspectives on the role of art in contemporary societies. The work aspires to serve as a significant intellectual contribution to understanding the interplay between artistic creation, society, and digital technologies.
With dual training in French language and literature as well as law and political sociology, Fouzia ELBAYED also serves as the editor-in-chief of the journal ARTS, under the auspices of the Ministry of Culture. As an art critic, researcher, and trainer for executives, she has published several works, including three dedicated to theatre, along with various guides and educational manuals. Her research primarily focuses on the connections between literature, culture, pedagogy, and the evaluation of public policies.
