Ethiopia: Dangote Group Ups Its Mega Fertilizer Plant Project to Over $4 Billion
Dangote Group Announces Significant Cost Reevaluation for Fertilizer Plant in Ethiopia
The Nigerian conglomerate Dangote Group has announced a substantial reevaluation of the cost of its fertilizer plant project in Ethiopia, now estimated at over $4 billion, up from a previous budget of $2.5 billion.
This announcement comes as part of the development of a strategic industrial project signed in August 2025 with Ethiopian Investment Holdings (EIH), the Ethiopian sovereign fund.
An Expanded and More Ambitious Industrial Project
According to the group, this increase in costs is attributed to the expansion of the project’s scope, which now incorporates several complementary infrastructures, including:
- A 110 km gas pipeline
- A 120 MW power plant
- A polypropylene packaging factory
- A production unit for NPK fertilizers (nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium)
These additions aim to enhance the energy and logistical autonomy of the industrial complex.
Major Production Capacity for Africa
The industrial site, located in Gode in southeastern Ethiopia, is projected to achieve an annual production capacity of 3 million tons of fertilizer.
A blending unit for NPK fertilizers of approximately 2 million tons is also planned, boosting the country’s ability to meet its agricultural needs and reducing its dependence on imports.
Project Already Underway
Construction of the complex officially began in October 2025. A site visit was recently conducted by Aliko Dangote, accompanied by Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed, confirming the project’s progress.
This visit also served as an opportunity to officially announce the increased overall investment.
A Structured Partnership Between the Private Sector and the State
Under the terms of the initial agreement, Dangote Group will hold 60% of the project, while Ethiopian Investment Holdings will own the remaining 40%.
This public-private partnership aligns with Ethiopia’s strategy to develop local industries capable of supporting agricultural production and enhancing food security.
A Strategic Project for African Agriculture
Beyond Ethiopia, this project is seen as transformative for the entire African continent, where the demand for fertilizers continues to rise significantly.
It could help improve agricultural yields, support the transformation of food systems, and strengthen regional agricultural sovereignty.
Accelerating Industrial Investment in East Africa
With the revised investment, Dangote Group confirms its position as a major player in industrialization across Africa, particularly in strategic sectors related to energy, agro-industry, and agricultural inputs.
This project also illustrates the growing attractiveness of Ethiopia for large industrial investments on the continent.
