Patrick Drahi, Moroccan-born billionaire, is poised to turn the page on SFR.

Patrick Drahi: A Major Turning Point in His Career with the Potential Sale of SFR
Moroccan-born businessman Patrick Drahi may soon finalize one of the most significant transactions of his career—the sale of the French telecom operator SFR. This sale would mark a major turning point for the founder of the Altice Group, who has built his international empire through a strategy of debt-financed acquisitions.
Born in Casablanca in 1963, Drahi left Morocco at the age of 15 to pursue his studies in France, eventually entering the telecommunications sector. Over the years, he has constructed an international conglomerate active in telecommunications, media, and digital services, becoming one of the wealthiest individuals in France.
His acquisition of SFR in 2014 was the most iconic move of his entrepreneurial journey. Now, twelve years later, Altice France is negotiating the sale of the operator with several major players in the French telecommunications market, including Bouygues Telecom, Orange, and Iliad. According to various estimates, the transaction could exceed €20 billion.
This operation fits into Altice’s ongoing debt reduction strategy that has taken place in recent years. Facing rising interest rates and financial pressures, the group has already divested several assets, particularly in media, to cut down its debt and bolster its financial standing.
Despite this reorganization, Patrick Drahi retains significant stakes in several strategic sectors, including through the auction house Sotheby’s and various international media assets. The sale of SFR could thus pave the way for a new phase in the global expansion of his business activities.
