Posthumous Tribute to Driss Chraïbi at the 30th Edition of SIEL
The 30th edition of the International Book and Publishing Fair (SIEL) will take place from April 18 to 27, honoring Moroccan writer Driss Chraïbi, one of the major figures in Moroccan and international literature. A special space will be dedicated to showcasing his work, featuring an exhibition rich in photographs and testimonials, allowing the public to discover or rediscover the breadth of his literary legacy.
This tribute to Driss Chraïbi reflects a desire to celebrate his significant contributions to literature and his lasting influence beyond Moroccan borders. Additionally, Driss El Yazami, president of the Council of the Moroccan Community Abroad (CCME), announced that during the 2025 edition of SIEL, the Council’s pavilion will highlight the 70th anniversary of the publication of the novel “Les Boucs”, the first Moroccan work addressing the theme of migration, which was published in 1955.
Born on July 15, 1926, in El Jadida and raised in Casablanca, Driss Chraïbi moved to Paris in 1945 to study chemistry. However, he chose to devote himself to literature and journalism, fields in which he achieved great success. He is the author of several notable works and received numerous awards, including the Prix Afrique Méditerranée in 1973 for his entire body of work, and the Prix de l’Amitié Franco-Arabe in 1981.
Driss Chraïbi passed away in April 2007 in Drôme, in the southeast of France, where he had lived since 1988. His work continues to leave an indelible mark on the literary world.
