Port of Casablanca: Moving Towards Near-Continuous Operations to Streamline Logistics Traffic

The night opening of gate 4 at the port of Casablanca marks a new milestone in the modernization of the Kingdom’s primary port platform. This measure aims to alleviate truck traffic congestion and enhance the fluidity of logistics operations, amid a context of significant growth in trade exchanges.
A Night Opening to Alleviate Port Congestion
The port of Casablanca has taken a significant step in its operational organization with the temporary reopening of gate 4 during the night, from midnight to 7 a.m. Effective since June 1, this decision applies to all administrations, operators, and concessionaires operating within the port area.
This initiative complements the operations of gate 6, which is already in service, in order to better distribute traffic flows and reduce waiting times for transporters.
A Response to Industry Demands
For several years, stakeholders in the transport and logistics sector had been calling for an extension of the port’s operating hours. Difficulties related to congestion and unloading delays had fostered a climate of tension, prompting numerous professional organizations to consider a strike action in early June.
After several meetings among local authorities, industry representatives, and port officials, an agreement was reached, allowing for the suspension of this mobilization and paving the way for new improvement measures.
Infrastructures Under Pressure
The saturation of the port of Casablanca is also attributed to the continuous increase in trade flows recorded in recent years. This growth places significant pressure on existing infrastructures and prolongs the processing times for goods.
The regular presence of numerous ships waiting offshore illustrates the challenges facing this platform, regarded as one of the country’s major economic hubs.
A Transitional Solution Before More Ambitious Projects
While the night opening of gate 4 is welcomed by industry professionals, it is seen as an emergency measure rather than a permanent solution. Several observers believe that sustainable resolution of congestion issues will require more substantial investments, particularly through the expansion of port capacities and the modernization of logistics infrastructures.
Nonetheless, this development serves as a positive signal for economic operators, who hope to see the port of Casablanca strengthen its competitiveness and enhance its ability to support Morocco’s commercial dynamics.
