Electricity: ONEE Commissioning a 274 km High Voltage Line Between Chemaia and Médiouna

The National Office for Electricity and Drinking Water (ONEE) is continuing to strengthen the national electricity network with the commissioning of a new Extra High Voltage (EHV) line operating at 400 kV, connecting the Chemaia and Médiouna substations. Spanning a length of 274 kilometers, this strategic infrastructure has involved an investment of 529 million dirhams.

This achievement is part of ONEE’s investment program aimed at modernizing, securing, and enhancing the national electricity transmission network to meet the growing needs of the Kingdom.

A Strategic Infrastructure for the National Electricity Network

According to ONEE, this new line is a crucial link in the electricity transmission network. It will enhance energy transit capabilities, bolster the reliability of power supply, and ensure more efficient operation of the national system.

The Moroccan electricity transmission network currently spans over 30,700 kilometers of high and extra high voltage lines (HV and EHV) and has a transformation capacity of 22,120 MVA, ensuring improved supply security on a national level.

An Ambitious Program by 2030

The commissioning of this line is part of a comprehensive development plan for the electricity network spearheaded by ONEE.

By 2030, the institution plans to expand the length of the national network to 37,000 kilometers while increasing the transformation capacity to 35,000 MVA through the construction of new lines and new Extra High Voltage substations.

These investments aim to address the continuous rise in electricity demand and support the Kingdom’s major economic development projects.

Supporting Morocco’s Energy Transition

Beyond network enhancement, these infrastructures will play a critical role in integrating renewable energy into the national electrical system.

ONEE aims to improve network resilience, facilitate the connection of future solar and wind projects, and ensure the effective transport of electricity produced throughout the territory.

Through this new Extra High Voltage line, ONEE reaffirms its commitment to a modern, reliable, and efficient electricity network capable of supporting the energy transition and the economic and social development of Morocco.
