180 Bank Branches Closed in 2025, While Participatory Banks Continue to Expand

The Moroccan banking network continued its restructuring in 2025. According to the report titled “Banking Establishment” published by Bank Al-Maghrib, the number of bank branches declined over the year, resulting from the closure of 180 branches, while participative banks steadily expanded their presence across the country.

The document, prepared by the Direction of Statistics and Data Management of the central bank, indicates a decrease in the total number of counters and bank branches, dropping from 5,701 in 2024 to 5,550 in 2025, marking a net reduction of 151 points of sale.

In total, 29 new branches were opened nationwide during the year, compared to 180 closures, confirming the ongoing rationalization of physical networks undertaken by banking institutions.

Conventional Banks Reduce Their Network

Conventional banks are responsible for the majority of this contraction. Their network decreased from 5,486 branches in 2024 to 5,331 in 2025, with 25 openings offset by 180 closures.

Among individual establishments, Banque Populaire reports the largest decline, closing 66 branches, followed by Bank of Africa (with 43 closures) and Attijariwafa Bank (with 27 closures).

In contrast, Al Barid Bank continues to strengthen its territorial reach. The institution opened seven new branches without closing any, thus expanding its network to 950 branches, making it one of the largest in the Kingdom.

Moderate Growth of Participative Banks

Participative banks, on their part, continue to develop, albeit at a moderate pace. Their network grew from 206 to 210 branches in 2025, due to the opening of four new outlets without any closures.

Offshore banks, on the other hand, remained completely stable with nine branches, an unchanged level compared to the previous year.

Casablanca-Settat Remains the Best-Served Region

The territorial distribution of bank branches continues to reflect significant disparities among the twelve regions of the Kingdom.

The region of Casablanca-Settat maintains its leading position with 1,559 branches, despite the closure of 59 outlets and the opening of just six new branches during the year.

It is followed by Rabat-Salé-Kénitra, with a total of 829 branches after five openings and 30 closures, while Fès-Meknès ranks third with 645 branches.

At the other end of the scale, the region of Dakhla-Oued Eddahab remains the least served, with 32 branches, a level that has remained stable after the opening and closing of one branch during the year.

Persistent Gaps in Banking Density

The report by Bank Al-Maghrib also evaluates banking density by relating the adult population (15 years and older), according to projections from the High Commission for Planning (HCP) based on the 2024 General Population and Habitat Census, to the number of bank branches, excluding offshore banks.

The region of Oriental boasts the best banking coverage in the country, with 3,460 adults per branch, followed closely by Casablanca-Settat, which has 3,681 adults per outlet.

Conversely, Drâa-Tafilalet shows the lowest banking density, with 7,870 adults per branch, followed by Marrakech-Safi, where each branch serves an average of 7,201 adults.

The report is supplemented by a substantial statistical annex detailing, community by community and region by region, the distribution of branches from all banking establishments—both conventional and participative—at the end of 2025. The data highlights a gradual reshaping of the Moroccan banking landscape, marked by the rationalization of physical networks in favor of adapting to new customer usage patterns and the rise of digital banking services.
