TikTok Applies a 20% VAT on Its Advertising Campaigns in Morocco

Moroccan companies and brands that utilize TikTok for their advertising campaigns are now facing a new tax burden. The Value Added Tax (VAT) applied to the digital advertising services of the platform has come into effect in Morocco, leading to an increase in the cost of campaigns aimed at local audiences.

This development is part of a broader trend to better integrate the digital services offered by major international platforms into the Moroccan tax system, as the online advertising market continues to experience steady growth.

As of August 1st, TikTok Ads’ advertising services are subject to a 20% VAT in Morocco. This measure specifically impacts businesses, brands, communication agencies, and digital marketing players that use the platform to promote their products and services to Moroccan consumers.

This new tax regulation requires advertisers to reassess the actual cost of their campaigns. For instance, a campaign with a budget of 10,000 dirhams excluding tax could rise to 12,000 dirhams after the 20% VAT is applied.

The same principle applies to larger budgets. A campaign costing 50,000 dirhams before tax could total around 60,000 dirhams including all taxes, depending on the applicable tax treatment for the advertiser.

However, the financial impact of this measure will not be uniform across all professional users. The accounting and tax treatment will depend on factors such as the nature of the business, its VAT status, and its eligibility for input tax deduction in accordance with current regulations.

This change could prompt some digital marketing professionals to reevaluate their advertising strategies, specifically by adjusting the budgets allocated to campaigns or redistributing their investments across different digital platforms.

The inclusion of TikTok’s advertising services under VAT also highlights the evolving Moroccan fiscal landscape in response to the rise of the digital economy. With the increase in transactions and services offered by international platforms, digital taxation is gradually becoming a significant concern for businesses and professionals operating in Morocco.
