Moroccan Sahara: Riyadh Reaffirms Its Support for the Autonomy Plan
Saudi Arabia has reiterated its support for Morocco’s autonomy initiative for the Sahara, reaffirming its commitment to the sovereignty of Morocco and its territorial integrity. This position was expressed by the Saudi representative during an intervention before a committee, which also called for a politically-based solution rooted in consensus and relevant United Nations resolutions.
Riyadh Advocates for a Politically-Based Solution Centered on Autonomy
In his statement, the Saudi diplomat reaffirmed Riyadh’s backing of Morocco’s autonomy initiative for the Moroccan Sahara, in accordance with the Kingdom’s sovereignty and territorial integrity.
The representative also reminded attendees that the autonomy plan has been praised by the United Nations Security Council. According to him, this initiative aligns with international law, the United Nations Charter, as well as the resolutions of the Security Council and the General Assembly.
A Call for Consensus and Realism
Furthermore, Saudi Arabia supports Morocco’s efforts to achieve a realistic political solution to the Sahara issue. Riyadh believes that this solution must be based on consensus and should take into account the pertinent resolutions of the Security Council.
The Saudi representative urged all concerned parties to demonstrate wisdom, realism, and a spirit of consensus to facilitate a political resolution to the dispute.
Regional Stability at the Heart of the Issues
For Riyadh, the resolution of the Sahara issue also carries a regional dimension. The diplomat emphasized that a solution to this conflict would contribute to enhancing security and stability in the region.
