Celebration of Africa Day at the AU Headquarters

Africa Day Celebrated with a Call for Unity and Development

Africa Day was celebrated on Monday at the headquarters of the African Union (AU) in Addis Ababa, under the theme "Sixty-three (63) Years of Unity, Integration, and Development: Let’s Celebrate Together."

On this occasion, the Chairperson of the AU Commission, Mahmoud Ali Youssouf, noted that Africa Day is both a celebration of "our common heritage" and an acknowledgment of Africa’s growing role on the global stage. He emphasized that the continent continues to advocate for solidarity, cooperation, and shared humanity in an increasingly uncertain world.

Over the past year, Africa’s voice has continued to gain prominence globally, he added, pointing out that "our permanent membership in the G20 represents a historic step toward Africa’s participation in global economic decision-making and contributes significantly to international solutions regarding peace, climate, food security, trade, health, and sustainable development."

He reaffirmed the African Union’s unwavering commitment to the aspirations of Agenda 2063 and "the construction of the Africa we want," mentioning that the AU is also advancing institutional reforms aimed at creating a stronger, more effective, and responsive Union that can meet the aspirations of the continent’s people.

Africa remains united in calling for a fairer and more representative multilateral system, including a comprehensive reform of the United Nations Security Council to rectify the long-standing historical injustices against the continent, he continued.

The celebration of Africa Day was marked by a series of sports and cultural events.
