ONEE Opens Access to Green Energy for Its Medium Voltage Customers: A New Turning Point in the Energy Transition

ONEE Expands Access to Green Electricity for Medium Voltage Customers

On Monday, the National Office of Electricity and Drinking Water (ONEE) announced a significant advancement in its energy transition strategy: the opening of access to green electricity for its medium voltage (MV) clients.

In an official statement, the Office emphasized that this initiative aligns with the implementation of the national energy strategy, which aims to establish a sustainable, low-carbon, and competitive model. By broadening access to renewable energy for MV customers, ONEE reaffirms its central role in stimulating the clean energy market in Morocco.

Since the enactment of law 13-09 on renewable energies, ONEE has acted as a catalyst for investors wishing to develop green projects, while facilitating access to this energy for clients eager to reduce their carbon footprint.

The beginning of 2025 marks an important milestone, with the delivery of the first kilowatt-hours of renewable origin to MV customers. Nearly 60 GWh of green electricity have recently been marketed by private producers connected to ONEE’s national transmission network, benefiting several clients, including:

  • TANGER MED UTILITIES (Tanger-Tétouan-Al Hoceima region),

  • SAINT GOBAIN (free zone of Kénitra – Rabat-Salé-Kénitra region),

  • MANAGEM, with two sites in Ouarzazate (Drâa-Tafilalet region).

This initiative strengthens ONEE’s commitment to support all its clients, whether in Very High Voltage (VHV), High Voltage (HV), or now Medium Voltage (MV), as they transition towards cleaner energy.

Since the market was opened to renewable energies, over 21.2 TWh of green electricity has been consumed by approximately thirty VHV-HV clients, mainly from the industrial sector, spread across more than a hundred sites.

To support the growth of renewable energies and address the challenges of intermittency, ONEE is implementing significant flexibility and electrical storage programs. A large-scale project to strengthen and expand the transmission network is also underway, with plans to increase annual investments fivefold by 2030.

With this new measure, ONEE confirms its determination to democratize access to clean energy and to leverage the energy transition as a driver of economic competitiveness, enabling Moroccan companies to improve their carbon footprint while optimizing their energy costs.
