France Reaffirms Its Strong Support for Morocco’s Sovereignty over the Sahara

In a statement released on Tuesday by the French Ministry of Foreign Affairs, following a meeting between French Minister for Europe and Foreign Affairs, Jean-Noël Barrot, and his Moroccan counterpart, Nasser Bourita, France reaffirmed its “unchangeable” stance on the issue of Moroccan sovereignty over the Sahara.
The statement recalls remarks made by President Emmanuel Macron in his letter to His Majesty King Mohammed VI, dated July 30, 2024, asserting that “the present and future of Western Sahara is framed within Moroccan sovereignty.” The French diplomatic stance emphasizes its consistent commitment to this position, indicating a determination to act coherently both nationally and internationally.
Jean-Noël Barrot also reiterated France’s clear and unwavering support for the autonomy plan proposed by Morocco, viewing it as “the only viable framework to achieve a political solution” to the conflict.
Highlighting the growing international consensus around this Moroccan initiative, the minister affirmed that France intends to play an active role in this momentum.
Finally, the statement concludes by reaffirming France’s commitment to supporting Morocco’s efforts for economic and social development in its Southern provinces, recalling the actions already undertaken and emphasizing the desire to strengthen this cooperative dynamic.
