Casablanca Launches Major Project to Relocate Wholesale Markets to Had Soualem

Casablanca Undertakes Major Transformation of its Food Distribution System

Casablanca is embarking on a significant transformation of its food distribution system with the launch of an extensive project relocating wholesale markets to Had Soualem, approximately fifteen kilometers from the city center. Inspired by the model of the Rungis International Market in France, this future agri-food hub aims to consolidate the main wholesale platforms currently scattered throughout the city onto a single site.

Spanning an area of 309 hectares, this structural project is designed to address challenges related to urban congestion, the nuisances generated by existing markets, and the growing demands for health and logistical standards.

A 2 Billion Dirham Investment

The first phase of the project involves an estimated investment of 2 billion dirhams over a three-year period beginning in 2025. The land, owned by the state, will be acquired by the Casablanca municipality as part of an institutional arrangement involving multiple public stakeholders.

Financing for the project will include contributions from the Ministries of Interior, Agriculture, and Equipment, alongside the Casablanca Municipality, the regional council, and the CDG through its subsidiary Médea.

Initial construction work began in late 2025, with the completion of infrastructure expected by early 2028.

An Integrated “Food City”

The upcoming complex will feature several specialized sectors dedicated to fruits and vegetables, meat products, fish, and poultry. The facility will be outfitted with modern infrastructure that includes cold chains, refrigerated warehouses, traceability systems, sorting centers, and logistical platforms.

Additionally, the project will incorporate service facilities such as bank counters, a health center, a hotel, and large parking areas to ensure the smooth operation of this new regional platform.

A Reconfiguration of the Distribution System

In the long term, several historical infrastructures in Casablanca will be relocated to Had Soualem, including the Sidi Othmane wholesale market, the wholesale fish market, and the Hay Mohammadi poultry market.

Beyond easing urban congestion, this strategic project is expected to instigate a profound modernization of the food distribution chain in the Casablanca-Settat region, the Kingdom’s primary economic area, while also enhancing sanitary, logistical, and environmental conditions for wholesale trade.
