Engie and OCP Forming Joint Venture to Accelerate Energy Transition in Morocco

Strengthening Cooperation in Green Energy

French group Engie and Moroccan group OCP are set to enhance their collaboration through the establishment of a joint venture, which is expected to launch in the fall of 2026. This new entity aims to accelerate the execution of strategic projects announced by both partners in the realms of green energy, water management, and sustainable industry.

Technical and feasibility studies initiated months ago have reportedly advanced significantly, paving the way for the imminent realization of this industrial partnership.

Investment in Energy Transition

The forthcoming joint venture will be responsible for the development of several key projects intended to support Morocco’s energy transformation.

The partnership specifically envisions the implementation of electricity production capacity from renewable energies, the development of energy storage solutions, the construction of modern electrical infrastructure, as well as the execution of seawater desalination projects.

Both groups also aspire to establish sectors dedicated to the production of green hydrogen and green ammonia, viewed as crucial levers for industrial decarbonization.

Supporting OCP’s Decarbonization Strategy

This cooperation aligns with OCP’s strategy to reduce its carbon footprint and expedite the transition to more sustainable production methods.

Leveraging Engie’s expertise in renewable energy and infrastructure, the Moroccan group aims to strengthen its energy autonomy while securing its water needs through new desalination capabilities.

Beyond the benefits to OCP, these projects will contribute to the development of Morocco’s clean energy ecosystem and help achieve national energy transition objectives.

Enhanced Economic Cooperation between Morocco and France

The partnership between Engie and OCP was officially announced in October 2024 in Rabat, during French President Emmanuel Macron’s state visit to Morocco.

According to multiple sources, the official announcement of the joint venture’s creation may coincide with the upcoming state visit of King Mohammed VI to France, anticipated in the fall.

Simultaneously, the commissioning of the desalination plant in Dakhla, developed by Engie in partnership with Nareva, is set to illustrate the strengthening of economic cooperation between Rabat and Paris in the sectors of energy, water, and infrastructure.

A Strategic Partnership for Morocco’s Ambitions

Through this future joint venture, Engie and OCP aim to contribute to the development of a more sustainable industrial model, grounded in renewable energy, water resource valuation, and low-carbon technologies.

This partnership could thus emerge as one of the most significant projects in Moroccan-French economic cooperation in the fields of energy transition and industrial innovation.
