Nador West Med is nearing commissioning with trials conducted in partnership with MSC.

The Nador West Med Port Approaches a New Development Milestone

Nador West Med Port is inching closer to a new phase in its development, as several indicators suggest it is preparing for the commercial launch of its container terminal. Test operations, which include the docking of ships and the handling of containers, highlight the progress being made in the operational preparations of the port complex.

These signals have been bolstered by the presence of a container ship from MSC near the East quay of the port, an essential part of the preparations for welcoming commercial vessels. West Med Container Terminal, the concessionaire of the container terminal and a subsidiary of Marsa Maroc and TIL, has announced the successful completion of operational trials.

These trials specifically focused on the docking of a vessel and the execution of handling operations, enabling the terminal to meet the necessary requirements for launching its activities ahead of the initial project timeline.

Last September, the port had already welcomed MSC container ships. The terminal has also been equipped with several state-of-the-art infrastructures and equipment, including STS quay cranes designed to handle large container ships and expedite loading and unloading operations.

Located in the Betoya Bay at the mouth of the Kert River, approximately 30 kilometers west of Nador, the Nador West Med complex is one of the key projects aimed at strengthening the port infrastructures in the Oriental region and enhancing its integration into international maritime trade networks.

The initial capacity of the container terminal is estimated at around 3 million TEUs per year, with the possibility of an additional expansion of 2 million TEUs. This capacity will allow the port to accommodate future increases in maritime traffic.

The project also includes an energy hub, as well as an industrial and logistics platform designed to attract both national and foreign investments, fostering the creation of an integrated economic ecosystem in the Oriental region.

Despite the acceleration of tests and technical preparations, no official and definitive date has yet been announced for the complete launch of commercial operations at the terminal.

Nonetheless, the completion of trials and the reception of test and commercial vessels signify the gradual transition of the project from the construction and equipment phase to the operational phase.
