Revitalizing Cultural Heritage in Essaouira: Insights from André Azoulay
André Azoulay, the founding president of the Essaouira-Mogador Association, stated on Monday in Rabat that the revitalization and restructuring of the Sidi Mohammed Ben Abdallah Museum will play a crucial role in strengthening the cultural and artistic infrastructure within the thriving economic and social landscape of Essaouira.
Synergy Among Cultural Institutions
During his remarks alongside Mohamed Mehdi Bensaid, the Minister of Youth, Culture, and Communication, Mehdi Qotbi, the President of the National Museums Foundation, and the president of the Essaouira municipal council, Azoulay praised the collaboration among these institutions aimed at giving “a new breath” to this historic museum.
Recognition of the Essaouira School of Arts
Azoulay also highlighted the prominence of the Essaouira School of Fine Arts, underscoring its significant status both in Morocco and internationally. He emphasized the need to create a dedicated space for artists who have contributed to the creative richness of this institution.
Growing International Recognition
He reminded attendees that works stemming from this artistic movement are now featured in major Western museums and private collections, a testament to their worldwide recognition.
Azoulay concluded by showcasing the success of the "Maison de la mémoire," inaugurated by King Mohammed VI in 2020, which welcomed over 120,000 visitors in 2025. He stressed that Essaouira’s cultural dynamism is a successful amalgamation of heritage, cultural diversity, and artistic innovation.
