Norway Plans to Ban Social Media for Under-16s
Norway to Propose Ban on Social Media Access for Children Under 16
Norway announced on Friday its intention to introduce a bill by the end of the year aimed at banning access to social media for children under the age of 16.
Protecting Childhood in the Digital Age
Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Støre explained that this measure seeks to enable children to fully experience their childhood without screens and algorithms taking precedence over play and social interactions.
Increased Responsibility for Platforms
The proposed legislation would require technology companies to verify the ages of minor users. However, the government has not yet specified which applications will be encompassed by this requirement.
A Growing European Trend
This initiative is part of a broader movement across Europe, where several countries, including France, Spain, and Denmark, are also considering establishing a minimum age for social media usage. Other nations, such as Australia and Turkey, have already adopted similar restrictions.
